Friends is a sitcom about a group of six friends living in New York City . It was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman and was originally broadcast from 1994 to 2004 . The series focused on the lives of a group of six twenty-somethings (eventually thirty-somethings ), consisting of three men and three women residing in Greenwich Village . In the US, the first episode was aired on NBC on September 22 , 1994 , and the last one on May 6 , 2004 ; the latter was at the time the highest- rated finale intelevision history.
